Team Members are encouraged to review the following Talking Points to help understand this exciting initiative, and to be prepared for potential customer questions.
- This program is rolling out across the country, as many other grocers are doing too. Sprouts has already eliminated single use plastic bags at 132 of its California stores.
- At Sprouts, We Care about our communities and our environment! It’s part of our Values.
- This program will eliminate 200 million single use plastic bags from circulation each year.
- Customers are encouraged to bring in their own reusable bags. We will charge .10 PLUS TAX per reusable plastic bag.
- Our new reusable bags can be used up to 125 times!
- Customers can recycle the new reusable bags, and their older, single use plastic bags at Sprouts recycling bins at the front of the store.
- Any bag takes energy and resources to produce. The most sustainable choice is a bag you already have.
- We want our customers to know that the best bag they can bring to the store is one they already have!
- If you receive any media inquiries, be sure to alert media@sprouts.com
- Note: Please ensure that you are bagging customers’ groceries when they bring in reusable bags from home. We are not asking customers to bag their own groceries based on the type of bag they will be using. Often, customers will help bag their own groceries, and that is acceptable, but we should NOT be telling customers to bag their own groceries if they bring in reusable bags.
- If a customer doesn’t have their own bag or is resistant to purchasing a reusable bag at that time, the Store Manager/Head Cashier can offer single use T-shirt bags to customers (only if the store has remaining inventory available) reinforcing other bag options (their own bag next visit, or purchasing a reusable plastic bag for .10 PLUS TAX).
- How will bags be charged for Instore Shoppers and online orders?
– For Instore Shoppers:
Upon completing the checkout process, cashiers will follow the same process for adding bag fees to the Instacart or DoorDash delivery order as they will for the in-store customers.
– For Online Orders:
-
-
- Customers will receive a notice of the new bag tax when placing their order.
- Finalized customer receipts will display the fee for the bag tax.
- In-store shoppers will be prompted with an additional step at the end of the checkout process on the shopping device to add the number of bags used to the customer’s order. Please see examples below:
