Let’s Celebrate! May is Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month

May is designated to Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month. At Sprouts, not only do we Love Being Different, but we celebrate our differences! This year’s theme for the celebration is “Bridging Histories, Shaping Our Future.” Take time this month to learn more about the month and why we celebrate.

Did You Know…

  • The month of May was specifically chosen to celebrate for two reasons: first, the month of May commemorates the first Japanese immigrants to arrive in the United States. Secondly, May marks the transcontinental railroad completion. Chinese immigrants worked tirelessly on this project starting in May of 1843 and ending in May of 1869.
  • Did you know that several Asian American and Pacific Islander women served in World War II? Many women were trained as translators and interpreters. Other women put their lives on the line through the underground resistance in the Philippines.

Ideas to Celebrate…

  • Read a book by an Asian or Pacific Island author.
  • Support local businesses. Research businesses in your area to find stores owned by people from Asian and Pacific Island countries.
  • Try a new activity rooted in Asian cultures, like tai chi, yoga, qigong, and meditation.
  • Explore food of the region. Try a new recipe or restaurant that serves Asian or Pacific Island cuisine.
